Well, in my case my Dad asked to borrow money and of course I gave it to him but he has been asking to borrow money a lot. I only give because I feel obligated to do so because he is my Dad and if I say no he gets all defensive. Why can’t I say no and hold my ground?

Tell him you don’t have it. What is he doing with all your money, anyway?

Not enough information to give you an intelligent answer. If you don’t feel comfortable about loaning your dad money then tell him you can’t.

I understand you want to help your dad but you need money for yourself and your family too, if you do have one. You need to support yourself too. Why is he asking for money? Is it for bills or for recreational items?? Is he employed or not? There’s a lot of questions. Either way, help him as much as you can then let him know that you have to help yourself too.

You answered you own question – why can’t you say no and stand your ground? It’s because you feel obligated. You feel like they he has provided for you, and when he needs something you are obligated to provide for him. Maybe next time you should ask him, Dad, do you realize the difficult you are putting me in by constantly asking for money? I can’t say no to you because you’re my dad, but you’re hurting me financially.

Say that you are saving up for something. (Ipod, car, college) Say that you don’t have enough to spare. If he gets all defensive then tell him it is your money and you will choose how to spend it.

This just happened to me about 2 weeks ago. My mother married a man 4 years ago because she thought he was going to have cash money. Now, she has nothing, and niether does her husband, so she asks me for money from time to time. She asked me for $5 to buy food because we had nothing to eat. I didn’t mind feeding my brothers, but the fact that I’d be putting food in her husbands mouth just pissed me off. Just let your father know that he’s supposed to be taking of the family and not you.

Next time he asks give him the money and say that it is the last time no matter what, so make the money last.
Unless you live at home and he severely needs the money. Then I think it is ok to give him whatever he needs and help him out.
If it is for an actual GOOD reason, give it to him if you want, BUT if it is for something ridiculous, then just look at him and be like “come on man, really?”

Only allow them what you can afford to give. In other words, don’t expect to be paid back. If it occurs too much give your dad a lecture like he would have given you when you were young.
